Why it looks like this

Basra is Iraq's port city, built where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have already merged into one broad waterway, the Shatt al-Arab, flowing to the Gulf. The old quarter — al-Başrah al-Qadīmah — grew along that bank, and canals once ran between its houses, earning the city the nickname 'Venice of the East'.

Many canals have since silted up or been filled, but the street pattern still remembers them: dense, irregular lanes near the water, with newer straight roads spreading inland over flat delta land.
