Why it looks like this

Baoding's name means roughly 'protecting the capital': under the Qing dynasty it was the seat of Zhili province, the region that surrounded and guarded Beijing. The old administrative town grew as a compact walled core on the dead-flat plain.

With no river bends or hills to fight, the modern city simply extended the grid outward in rings of wide straight streets — a classic North China Plain pattern.
