Why it looks like this

On the map of Metro Manila, Caloocan appears twice. The old city, next to Manila proper, is a dense knot of streets around the historic monument to hero Andrés Bonifacio. The much larger northern section — full of vast planned housing projects — lies several kilometres away.

Between them sits land taken for Quezon City, the planned capital laid out from 1939. Caloocan kept both fragments, becoming one of the world's odder city shapes: a single city split clean in two.
