Why it looks like this

British settlers founded Port Natal in 1824 beside a huge, almost enclosed lagoon — one of the few natural harbours on this coast. The city grid grew between the bay and the ridge of the Berea, whose leafy heights caught the sea breeze.

Apartheid then drew the wider map: Black residents were removed to distant planned townships like KwaMashu and Umlazi, separated from the centre by buffer land — a geometry of enforced distance the city is still working to undo.
