Why it looks like this

Rawalpindi grew the ordinary way — a Grand Trunk Road bazaar town that the British made one of their largest garrisons in Asia, with the cantonment's straight, shaded roads laid beside the old city's dense mohallas. Pakistan's army headquarters keeps that military geography alive.

In the 1960s its opposite was built next door: Islamabad, a sector-grid capital designed by Doxiadis on empty land. 'Pindi' served as interim capital during construction, and the two cities now function as one metropolis — organic bazaar town and drawn grid, side by side.
