Why it looks like this

Tokyo's street network has no centre because it has hundreds of them. The city began as Edo, a castle town whose moats circled outward in a spiral from the ruler's castle — today's Imperial Palace, the big empty space in the middle of the map. Fires, earthquakes and war destroyed and rebuilt the city many times, but never into a grid.

Modern Tokyo organises itself around railways instead: the Yamanote loop line and its many stations each gather a knot of dense, walkable streets around them. The pattern is not disorder — it is a constellation.
