Why it looks like this

No major city lies farther from the sea: Ürümqi sits in the heart of Eurasia, in a gap between the snow peaks of the Tian Shan and the deserts of the Junggar basin. Caravans of the Silk Road's northern branch passed this way, and the Qing empire built a garrison town here in the 18th century.

The modern capital of Xinjiang stretches along the valley corridor, its long axis pinned between mountains — a Han-era trade geography now carrying railways and highways toward Central Asia, with the Grand Bazaar recalling the city's caravan past.
